If you're looking for something fun and educational for boys and girls ages 7-10 to do at the end of the summer, just when they're bored and you're ready for them to start school, sign them up for Tome's Heritage Week Day Camp.
This year's theme is Life Along the Santa Fe Trail. Kids will discover what it was like to travel west in a covered wagon in the 1840s and arrive here in Las Vegas. There will be interactive programming, including hands-on activities like making a covered wagon model, sewing a mini quilt, creating a trail map, and roping and knot-tying. Kids will "travel" over 900 miles during their 5-day adventure and learn about life here 160 years ago. They'll hear first-hand journal accounts from those who traveled the Santa Fe Trail including scouts and soldiers, trappers and hunters, and trail merchants. They'll also learn about animal care, cooking on the trail, tracking wild animals, and kids' daily chores of the time. Of course, there will be camp songs, too!
The camp will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Hall, smack in the middle of the Old Santa Fe Trail! Hours are 9am-2pm, Monday through Friday August 8-12.
The activity fee is $50 per child. There are a limited number of scholarships. Registration runs through Monday, July 25. Children must provide their own lunch; beverages will be provided. Space is limited, so register now at Tome on the Range, 158 Bridge Street.
